TOPIC: BIBLICAL PARENTING (PART 2)
Deut. 6: 7. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Beloved, in continuation of what we started yesterday, biblical parenting is parenting according to Bible pattern. The parents have the role of caring for the spiritual life of their children.
Beloved, leading every one of your children/ward to Christ is the greatest privilege God has given to you as a parent.
Don’t assume because they follow you to church that they are saved! Make sure you confirm their salvation by yourself and continue to intercede for those not yet saved under your roof. Until all the children under your roof are saved by grace, your future is not guaranteed.
I have seen parents who worked so hard to build empires for their children but the empires/business estate could not be maintained because the children took God out of the equation.
Beloved, education is very good but alongside education, ensure you influence your children/ward with godliness.
Anything without God goes no where, so also a life without God is limited.
Hence, your own salvation as a parent must not be in doubt. This is because you can can only give what you have. If you are not sure of your salvation go back to your Pastor, let him guide you properly.
There is difference between head knowledge and experiencing genuine salvation. For the sake of the kind of family you want to raise, get serious with God.
So how do you communicate godly influence?
1. Through actions. This includes your behaviour, your attitude to life in general because action speaks louder than words and children learn by imitation.
2. Through your voice: Our anchor scripture (Deut.6:6-7) gives an information when to do the talking;
Deut. 6: 7. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them:
a. when thou sittest in thine house. The best position to talk to your children is sitting position. So occasionally, call your children to sit down while you teach them the word of God.
b. and when thou walkest by the way.
This also shows that you can speak about God and His kingdom as you walk together even on transit, use the nature that they can see to pass your message.
c. and when thou liest down.
At the point of lying down to sleep, try and share with them the goodness of God for the day.
d. and when thou risest up. This speaks of morning devotion. In many homes this is done every day.
The second responsibility of biblical parenting is emotional care;
Colossians 3: 21. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
You have a responsibility to care for your children’s emotional well-being. Their emotions matter. Children who feel good, act good. Treating your children with gentleness helps them stay responsive to instruction and correction.
Finally the physical needs. This includes security, providing food, water, shelter, clothing, education etc(1Tim.5:8)
Please note that parents’ failure in caring for their children often attract God’s wrath;
1 Samuel 3: 13. For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
Beloved, observe the statement *”I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth;”!* In the story of Eli, the wife was not mentioned, and the entire house was judged because of the iniquity their father knew. Therefore don’t close your mouth when your children are dabbling into iniquity!
Proverbs 29: 15. The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
Speak when you ought to speak and discipline when you ought to discipline (Prov. 13: 24).
Proverbs 22: 15. Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.*
Remember this : Heaven is real and hell is real! Jesus is the only way to escape hell
