Topic: The Role Of Pastors, And Why We Need Them
Author: Pastor Abraham David
And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD. Jeremiah 23:4 KJV
Shepherds are pastors, that is their calling. They are chosen and called by God to shepherd His children. The Lord God says He will set up shepherds over His people, which He had done by giving us the gift of pastors, so to grow and be cared for as a Christian, you need a pastor as much as you need the Holy Spirit.
What is the role of shepherds [pastors]? God by Himself tells us what their role is, their role is ‘to feed His people’. He said, as read in our scriptural text, “and I will set up shepherds over them which shall FEED them…;” shepherds therefore feed God’s children with the word of God which is our spiritual food.
In Jeremiah 3:15, God says, “and I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall FEED you with knowledge and understanding.” Pastors Feed us with the knowledge and with the understanding of the word of God so that we won’t be ignorant and allow ignorance limit and destroy us, but continue to grow in the things of God.
We are spiritual beings who need spiritual food to survive and to grow, that’s why God gave us these special vessels of honour called pastors, to shepherd us by His spirit, and as we feed on the word of God by listening to their teachings and preachings and doing what the Spirit of God says through them, we grow and become mature in spiritual things.
As our pastors feed us with the knowledge and the understanding of God’s word, which would in turn cause us to grow, we would stop being afraid, because the word of God, as it comes to us would give us boldness and destroy fear in us, and as fear is destroyed, we won’t be terrified by anything anymore; and no one would be missing or be lost among us, that is, no one would go astray.
It’s ignorance that’s making a lot of people continue to live in fear. Many of them don’t know that fear is the weapon of the devil, which he is using to stop them from making progress or succeed in the things they do. Fear also, is the manifestation of unbelief, but as pastors feed the people with the knowledge of God’s word, their faith is built up, and as their faith is built up, fear disappears, and confidence in God is built up in place of fear.
Some people think that since we have the Holy Spirit as our teacher, we don’t need pastors anymore, that’s not true: there’s the place of the Holy Spirit in our lives as Christians and there is also the place of pastors in our lives as Christians, and no one can substitute or affect the other. You need your pastor as much as you need the Holy Spirit, therefore, from this moment, begin to pay special attention to your pastor, and take his teachings and messages seriously, because you need them to grow and become all that God wants you to be in life.
Precious Father, I ask that you bless my Pastor and grant to him all his good heart desires; be with his children and cause them to be great; as you continue to use him to teach me your word and cause me to grow spiritually, may you perfect everything that concerns him, in Jesus name. Amen.
